What Is Moisture-Resistant Gypsum Board?

Is Moisture-Resistant Gypsum Board Waterproof?
No. Moisture-resistant gypsum board is not completely waterproof.
This is one of the most important things for homeowners, contractors and installers to understand. The board can resist humidity, condensation and occasional minor splashes better than standard gypsum board, but it should not remain in direct or continuous contact with water.
It should generally not be used:
- Where water can continuously flow over the surface
- Inside an unprotected shower enclosure
- In areas with standing water
- On exterior walls exposed directly to rain
- Where plumbing leakage has not been repaired
- Below ground in continuously wet conditions
For direct wet zones, a proper waterproof backing system, cement board, approved glass-mat board or another manufacturer-recommended wet-area material may be required. Moisture-resistant gypsum products are generally intended for ventilated indoor locations with controlled humidity rather than permanent water exposure.
Moisture-Resistant Gypsum Board vs Standard Gypsum Board
The correct board should be selected according to room conditions, expected humidity, ventilation and the complete ceiling or partition system—not only according to price.
Moisture-Resistant Board vs Waterproof Board
The terms “moisture-resistant” and “waterproof” should not be used interchangeably.
A moisture-resistant board slows down moisture absorption and performs better under humidity. A waterproof system is designed to stop water penetration under specified conditions.
Even when moisture-resistant board is installed, the building must still have:
- Proper roof waterproofing
- Leak-free plumbing
- Adequate ventilation
- Correct joint treatment
- Suitable surface primer and paint
- Properly spaced and corrosion-resistant framing
- Installation according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Moisture-resistant board cannot solve an active roof, pipe or wall leakage problem. The source of water must always be repaired first.
